Andrea Maas, Ed.D

Andrea draws on her broad experiences in PK-12 and collegiate music education in diverse settings to inform her work with pre-service music educators. She comes to Potsdam from NYC where, after serving as Director of Student Teaching and completing her Doctoral work at Teachers College, Columbia University, she was Director of Curriculum for MusicFirst and Substitute Lecturer of Music Education at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College. Before returning to NY, Andrea taught PK-12 general music and choir in Vermont public schools, founded and directed community youth and show choirs and maintained a private voice studio. Since then, she has conducted numerous choral festivals and worked with undergraduate and graduate level students to develop skills, understandings and approaches toward music education in both music and non-music classrooms. Andrea's musical training and teaching include piano, voice, general music, choir, band, theory and musical theater. These broad experiences coupled with her interests in the ways we understand musical expression, drive Andrea to challenge students and teachers toward deeper meaning-making during musical encounters. This work continues to inform Andrea's commitment to music education and vocal expression through her approaches to music teacher preparation, curriculum development and engagements with musical works. Her dissertation, "Musical Expression in the High School Choral Classroom" is available online. A product of NYSSMA herself, Andrea feels privileged to have the opportunity to give back to future generations of music educators here in NYS at the Crane School of Music.
