Mya Scarlato is a visiting music education faculty member at SUNY Potsdam and a current music education doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds an M.A. in music education from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN (with an elementary music concentration), and a B.A. in music education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Mya has been teaching for eight years. She spent her first six years at an international school near Seoul, South Korea, where she taught full-time elementary general music and beginning band. After moving to New York City to begin doctoral studies, Mya has been teaching 2nd grade music at a NYC public school, general music classes and studio lessons at a school for twice exceptional (2e) students, and instrumental studio lessons to graduate students at Teachers College.

Her primary interests in the field of music education are in philosophy, creativity, and helping students develop transferrable, musical agency. Mya's dissertation research explores the philosophical concept of "leisure" as it pertains to lifelong music making, and examines secondary music classes that embody qualities of such in light of the traditional ensemble model of music instruction in the United States.
